The following links are to web pages that I seem to use a lot. I have divided them into sections that will hopefully make some sort of sense to you. They are mainly to do with walking in the Lake District (or other areas!), or the Lake District in general. I have included my own opinions in the description but please visit these sites and make up your own mind. The walking sites have been put together by people who share my love of the mountains and their need to share the experience, I do not know any of them, but I always keep a look out for them on my travels, who knows?, maybe one day I will meet them on the fells! The other sites are a mixture of information, such as as the BBC weather sites, and sites of interest to do with the Lake District, or activities within the Lake District in general. Also included are some gems that I have found during my wanderings on the web! |

Walking web sites
theLakelandFells Andrew Leaney's excellent site full of images of the Lakeland hills, full of references to both Wainwright and the FRCC. I must admit that I use this site often to plan routes, it is ideal to see the "lay of the land" In my opinion the best lake district walking page on the web.
Striding Edge Seans excellent and busy site. The star of the site though is Angus.
Oak Cottage Ann and Roger Hiley's web site. Plenty of walks with dogs in the Loweswater area.
Share the Fell Walking Experience With Andy Wallace. Fun to read and good photo's. Check out the picture on the home page!!

Mountain Rescue Organizations.
I have added this list of links to all of the Lake District mountain rescue teams web sites that I can find. I hope that noone who reads these pages will ever need the aid of these unsung heroes but if you take the time to read about some of the rescues that they have logged it may help you understand the potential hazards that are out there waiting to happen.
|
MRC The national body that covers all Mountain Rescue Organizations
LDSAMRA The body responsible for the 13 Lake District Mountain Recue Teams
Wasdale MRT A good place to find out about safety on the hills, and reports of actual rescue callouts - accidents DO happen! Has specific pages for the accident black spots of Broad Stand and also now information about Lords Rake.
Keswick MRT Covering the some of the Central, Southern, North and North Western fells . Specific pages about the accident blackspots of Sharp Edge (Blencathra) and Great End (usually in winter) covering 3 of the 4 highest mountains in England, and one third of all Wainwright tops!

Weather Links
I must admit that the BBC weather pages are generally very good. With a 5 day forcast for towns in the Lake District there are a good source for planning trips. BUT , as is the case with all such things it is a forcast and not a guarantee!, be prepared for the odd sunny spell as well as lots of rain, you have been warned!
Keswick 5 day forcast 5 Day Forecast For Keswick
Kendal 5 day forcast 5 Day Forcast for Kendal
Penrith 5 day forcast 5 Day Forecast For Penrith
Whitehaven 5 day forcast 5 Day Forecast For Whitehaven
Workington 5 day forcast 5 Day Forecast For Workington
Blackpool 5 day forcast just so I know what I will be missing!
The Mountain Weather Information Service A trial sort of thing that allows you to down load a PDF (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader availiable here to view. Working at the moment but may not be there in the future. It gives a good indication of what might be important to you i.e. How cold will it be?, how wet will it be?
Camping in the Lake District
These are links to the web sites of camping sites within the Lake District.
Waterside House near Pooley Bridge. The site of our anual camping trip for so many years, great for groups but they are starting to crack down on this now , say you are a collection of familys!
Skyside Campsite Loacted at the foot of Kirkstone Pass
Sites of interest Web sites that that I have found whilst walking the web. Usually found when I am looking for information about the area that we have been walking in. Historical, geographical or industrial heritage of the area. Also the odd red herring or just plain daft sites!
The Hodder and Thirlmere Aqueduct Access Gates A with loads of information about the history and construction of Thirlemere, Haweswater and the aqueducts that provide drinking water for Manchester and Liverpool. If you want to know about how your water gets to you this is the place.
Inland Scuba Dives in the English Lake District A great site showing another aspect of leisure activities that can be done in the Lake District. Great pages with underwater photos of places such as Haweswater and Hodge Close Quarrys. Use the "Go Scuba" navigation button for a full page map showing all the lakes, tarns and quarries that have been catalouged (and dived!). A fascinating site!
Industries of Cumbria A usefull page from the site that lists all of the industries, both old and new that have shaped the cumbria that we see today. Interesting to see what people used to have to do instead of the "9 to 5" grind that occurs now!
Honister Slate Mine A great site that tells the history of Slate extraction and finishing from this quarry. You can even go and have a guided tour of the mine, and see that Slate is still alive and well even today.
Coniston Bus Shelter One of the best web sites that I have ever come across! Recentley the victim of "political correctness " or "beaurocrasy gone mad"! , but now thankfully back on line! Show your support for the British sense of humour and visit the site and show that the "PC brigade" or the "thought police" cannot, and will not control us. Long live sarcasm!
