| When AW completed his original 7 pictorial guides he rejected
the idea of book 8 dealing with "The Outlying Fells", that was 1965. In
1973 "The Outlying Fells Of Lakeland" was published, why the change of
mind ? The book comprises of walks around the periphery of Lakeland, many
on the lower foothills of the Lake District proper. Some having altitudes
of just a few hundred feet, others over 2000' I have often wondered about the disparagy between AW and the FRCC, why two different lists? I have formed my own opinion on this with regard to some of the higher fells, but to be sure about some of the lower ones I felt like I needed to make a point of visiting these outlying fells (another excuse for a walk!) to be sure. While I write this I am in the middle of a month long break from "Wainwright Bagging" due to the lack of availiability of the rest of the Terrible Trio, off busy doing other stuff again! So I decided late one night that I should think of something to do that involved walking and this web site, something that would not be too taxing, a something to do whilst the others are busy sort of thing! So I decided on the Outlying Fells. Perhaps I could even have a race with myself, which would be completed first, the 214 "Wainwrights" with a head start of 64, or the Outlying Fells with a blank sheet and 56 walks over 113 named and unnamed summits and 1 "village settlement" to do ! Oh well, there is only one way to find out! |

I hope this makes sense. If you mouse over the red dots it will tell you the name of the walk as described by AW in his Outlying Fells Of Lakeland book. If you then click it will take you further down the page to that particular walk. I have listed all the relevant summits that AW compiled on his routes and the book page numbers. Also listed are the FRCC fell number if applicable. If I have done the walk (starting soon!) it will have a link to that
walk. I started to look closly at the book and thought about in what order to do the walks. After a bit of though I realised "why not just start at page one and carry on!" This seemed like a good idea, especially as walk 1 started in Kendal, why not pay a visit to the Kendal Mueseum and see the Alfred Wainwright exibits, what a plan! I wonder how long it will last for? Enjoy! |
